My Personal Journey.
Staying fit while traveling in a motorhome can be a challenge. Sure you can prepare and try to eat healthy, but your traveling and cooking habits aren’t easily duplicated as being in a home. Nor are they ever routine. And all the social and eating-out events make things a bit crazy. So keeping your body in shape and weight down to do the hiking and biking etc. that you will be doing requires you to keep a good exercise routine. As you probably know, I spend a year and a half losing a lot of weight and preparing myself for this adventure. So that I could keep up and actually do all these wonderful things. In doing so, I had the benefit of having a gym at my disposal. Now, there are others out there on the road that sign up for gym memberships that they can visit along the way, but I needed something I could do on my own. And more often. I was determined to do this and not give up. So I made a pact that I would get up every morning and go for my run and every other day I would add in my additional workout routine and weight training. Taking everything that I was doing in the gym to the outdoors and utilizing what ever I could around the campsite to accomplish this. I brought along 2 sets of weights that I could use in combination for different sets. At first this all seemed that it was going to be a piece of cake. Then I ran into the mountains of VA. Being in the gym and even using various elevations on the treadmill, did not prepare me for this. But I endured. I ran those hills and ran some more. Pulling hamstrings that wouldn’t relent. Stretching every which way I could to prevent more. Running with the pain and not giving up. Running in the heat, running in the rain, running in the cold. Standing Push ups against the camper and planks using the picnic tables . All kinds of standing crunches, side planks, arm curls, sitting tricep raises, lunges….you name it…….I do it. But it got better and better each day. I conquered all those mountains, the gravel and rocky unpaved roads/paths, as well as entertained each and every campground with my outdoor workouts. Even got a few thumb ups from watchers along the way. I’m surely not the greatest runner or athlete what so ever, and with age as a factor too, I can only give it my best. According to my running APP, I have put more than 700 miles on these sneakers since we began our journey. I know I have gained a few pounds back, some are good pounds of strong muscles, and others are ones I need to work to get back off. But in the end……I am doing things I never thought I could accomplish and feeling the best I have ever felt. So, I continue to put on those sneakers (which I probably need a new pair of soon) and get out there each and every day, no matter what. After all, life is all about the adventure. Vamoose!
