LAKE OCONEE, GA

A beautiful spot even for a short stop here.  The highlight was the view from our campsite overlooking the peaceful lake.  But even more interesting was the reason why we had to change sites upon arrival.   Many campgrounds allow you to reserve a specific site when making your booking.  And this was the case here.  However, when we arrived and were checking in, they were moving us to a different spot.   Now granted, the spot was just next to the spot we chose, but we paid a fee to reserve the end spot.  When I inquired, the one woman wasn’t really sure the situation, until a young man chimed in and said,” that site is not available right now”.  This seemed odd, especially in the middle of the peak season.   We soon learned that the site, which was complete with a large deck space connected to the site, had burned down.   UGGH.  The previous people in that site apparently let their fire pit go unattended overnight not being completely extinguished.  When the night winds picked up so did the embers igniting the deck.  Luckily their inside smoke detectors went off and work them up.  They very well could have burned up their camper as well.  Fortunately, no one was hurt.  Things could have been much worse.  Lesson learned….one NEVER leaves even a small ember burning in a fire pit.  In their defense too, the fire pit provided was not very heavy and was not designed to be on a wooden surface.   One reason we went to a propane fire pit.  Much safer and does the job just fine.  Based on this, we were happy to take the spot available and begin our stay.   Unbeknown to us however, we were not told they were planning on renovation of the other spot during our stay.   This involved them spraying some chemical on the wood molds they were using to expand the new concrete. The smell being so putrid that we had to close all our windows which were open enjoying the fall air.   This also prevented us sitting outside that day and evening. So, taking many walks was a must. THEN, 2 days of a cement truck literally being right up against the front of our motorhome over 2 days.   No one ever came to tell us or advise us of any of this.  Luckily, we moved our jeep in time to not be completely blocked in.  It was so crazy and disruptive, that when we complained they decided to refund us for our entire stay.   This was a great gesture on their part, and since it was only a 3 day stay for us, we dealt with it rather than moving again and resetting everything up.  I think they have learned a few things on their end from all this.
