After spending the holidays in the mountains of Georgia it was time to move south. The Florida Panhandle as our destination. After having a month of temperatures in the teens to 50s we were looking forward to some sunny weather and visits to the beach. We had a great spot all reserved at Twin Lakes Camp resort. This campground jets out between 2 lakes with the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Our spot backed up to the one lake and was just perfect. Once we got all set up, we took respite by sitting lakeside and taking it all in. After a while, the wind began to pick up and it continued with gusts getting stronger overnight. This continued for the next few days and kept the temperatures still a bit chilly. The days were sunny and we took some drives towards Destin to find the beach destinations. Unfortunately to find that dogs were not allowed, so it took us to just venturing in town and finding a place to grab a bit. The drive was over 40 minutes, so we took to heading back before it got too dark. And it did get dark. Which made the skies light up with a million stars to be seen so clearly. We loved this spot. The campground itself was not very big but that’s not always a bad thing. Many of the people there stayed a few months as was our plan. This plan however got to change when the weather continued to be windy and cold. Isn’t this supposed to be Florida? We had read so much about people spending the winters in this area. Guess maybe we forgot to read the fine print. As the days progressed, we were looking forward to tow excursion trips we were going to make. One to New Orleans to visit our friends Rebecca and Eric and from there to meet up with our longtime friends Nick and Maureen in Biloxi. The temperatures continued to remain cold and for many nights were below freezing. Then it happened. As we watched the forecasts, we watched in bewilderment of the apparent winter storm that was headed right for us. And not only us but for New Orleans and Biloxi as well. How can this be? Apparently, it hasn’t snowed in this area since 1960. So, leave it to us to have the perfect timing for the next record setter. And being from the north, we know that these areas don’t have any means to handle snow or ice or any combination of the two. SO, we all prepared by hitting the grocery, filling up our propane and making sure generator was all set in case of a power failure. And the weather channel didn’t lie. New Orleans got hit first and our friends were getting snowed in. Other friends Rich and Lysandra that were flying down to meet all of us had their flights cancelled. How disappointing this all was. We had made these plans months ago and the timing of the storm was just devastating. With no other option but to just hunker down and cancel our travel plans we awaiting the storm. It started with a light flurry and then heavy snow that lasted all day and overnight. We woke up to a blanket of about 7 inches of white snow. We made the best of the situation and since we had not seen snow like this in a while it was play time. Calli didn’t know what to make of it. She ran, slid, caught snowballs, and had a blast. Me…. I made a snow angel. The snow wasn’t the kind to make a snowman but I managed a mini one. It took almost a week for the snow to fully melt and the roads to clear. The sun would melt the snow and the cold would freeze it on the roads. On day three we ventured out to find everything….and I mean everything closed. Roads were chunky and bumpy and no one was taking any chances. When everything finally cleared, we decided that we needed to move somewhere a bit warmer. We found a great RV park in Ocala Florida, near where other good friends of ours stayed in their RV for the winter. They were thrilled to be able to see us and spend some time with us. Once there, we had the most beautiful weather. Finally….it felt like Florida should.
