We planned a trip north to Rapid City to get our Jeep windshield replaced since a rock took it out during our adventure in the Badlands. The appointment at SafeLite was late afternoon so Lin booked us a room in Deadwood at this great lodge / casino. Excellent choice and Calli agreed.
Neatly tucked away in the hills of northwest So. Dakota sits a fun little town that still feels like the old west. A majority of the buildings are still erect and carry the signs of yesteryear beckoning your attention.
History has it that in 1874 Col. George Custer and his men discovered gold on the French Creek and in 1875 a huge deposit of gold was unearthed in Deadwood. The town came to life in 1876 when prospectors arrived to claim their fortune striking gold in the Black Hills. It was a town devoid of laws with prostitution, gambling and conflicts between miners over claims. Deadwood is famous for Wild Bill Hickok, a gambling legend and a ladies man. His likeness can be found everywhere on posters and even residents and actors that re-enact his demise at the hands of Jack McCall. Saloon No. 10 where Hickok was shot still maintains the card room and authentic western feel of that time.
It was an entertaining visit that we would recommend if you’re passing through. It’s a beautiful scenic ride along 14A as it winds up through the canyon. There are plenty of existing and newer accommodations to meet your needs and casino’s everywhere for your adrenaline fix.
