Things that happen on the road
Traveling the country definitely has its advantages. Experiencing so many new sites, meeting local people and being in the wonders of the outdoors. In a stationary house, you never really spend as much time outside as you think you do. And the vistas never get old with the spectacular views. Along with this also goes the everyday challenges of things that just happen. Kevin, who wears glasses full time, had a few failures. His one main pair developed this weird bubble snow affect in the lenses. No worries, he always has a back-up pair. Well yes until a day into wearing them he went to swat away a big bug of some sort and bada bing…..broken glasses # 2. So, no big deal I thought…. you just call your eye doctor and explain about us being on the road so you can get his RX and go get another pair. Not so easy. Apparently, a new “law” that restricts the doc from sending his Rx because it was almost 2 years old. SERIOUSLY!!! I doubt this is a real thing but rather just another way to get you back in. I know for a fact that my eyes haven’t changed in years and years. And neither has his. Anyway……we are now out in the middle of no where and where do you find an eye doctor. Well thanks to Google, I found one in the town of Victor, ID. We called in advance of when we would be arriving in that area and they were so great and got us in. The appointment went seamlessly and they actually put the lenses from the broken frames into new frames and ordered lenses for his other frames which when done they offered to ship to us. The experience was like none we ever had and amazingly inexpensive compared to the more populated areas. I imagine this is one reason why many people live in small towns. You get that very personal treatment that we all deserve.
Our next situation was definitely an unusual one. During our traveling between places we many times encounter fairly rough roads. This has never been an issues as we are very good about making sure all our things are well put away and tethered before travel. On this occasion when we arrive at our location, upon opening the refrigerator, the main door tray gave way and everything dropped to the floor. This was very unexpected as you can guess. Luckily nothing broke, except the tray itself. One of the 2 very small plastic “knobs” that hold it in place completely sheared off for whatever reason. Possibly just a little too much weight and the bouncing took it out. We put our heads together to see what we can come up with. I suggested that maybe we could monster glue the piece back in and then perhaps add some additional support somehow. Obviously, we weren’t getting a whole new refrigerator door. And without this main shelf, we don’t have as much storage space. Kevin got his MacGyver hat on and decided we could indeed add some support brackets by drilling into the door itself. It was thick enough. And presto……mission accomplished. Just another thing that happens on the road that with some creativity and handy skills you can get through.
